Just a few weeks ago I was in Denver, Colorado facilitating a Turning Point for a client. I needed a printer for the 2-day event so the client could fly home with a clear documentation of the process, wins and next steps. Off I drove to Walmart. As I was perusing the printers, the sales guy told me a little secret.

Oprah Winfrey was fired from her job as a news anchor and was told she was “unfit for television.” Walt Disney’s newspaper editor told him he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas” as he fired him. Michael Jordan was kicked off his high school basketball team. Abraham Lincoln pretty much takes the cake.

It’s almost the 4th of July. What’s on your mind? Time with family or friends? Good food? A little get-away? Shopping? Maybe just another day of work? I have much of that on my mind too, but there’s something bigger that the upcoming holiday has gotten me thinking about: what it takes to achieve freedom and success.

It's okay to be funny. No. I take that back. It’s not just ok. You need to have more fun and be more funny. See, if you’re like most readers you’ve been in business for a while. You have employees to manage, customers to please, books to balance, and let’s just say a lot on your plate. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day drudgery and seriousness of business.

It was my birthday this week and a I went for a late afternoon hike in the hills. I had a few minutes for contemplation, and put my thoughts into a video. Local legend says that the rounded stone mound I came across is the burial place of a long dead sheikh. His name has been forgotten: only the stones bear tribute to the man buried within.
