Doing less is never the answer - here's the real solution

Doing less is never the answer - here's the real solution

February 18, 2010

If you've been watching the Olympics you've probably seen the trailers for Dreamworks' new movie, How to Train Your Dragon, a comedy adventure set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild, magical dragons.

But what you might not have known is that I've been talking with business leaders for years about how to tame their own magical dragons as part of our Brand Launcher System.

You see in the world I work, I often meet business leaders who have some sort of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). It can be a good thing sometimes or it can be a bad thing at other times.

I call it the 'Magical Dragon' because it can take an entrepreneur and perhaps his entire company from one place to another and you don't even know how they did it.

They're powerful , they're fast and they can do things with amazing speed. It's incredible what these entrepreneurs are able to do with their 'Magical Dragon.' Perhaps you know someone like this or perhaps this even describes you. If so, keep reading '

The skin of these entrepreneurs is even like a dragon. They can also take a lot of shots, such as criticism and skepticism from others and not be deterred. For entrepreneurs, they need skin like that.

That's a good thing. But that energy created by the 'Magical Dragon' can also be detrimental if it's not controlled. It can create an incredible wake left behind. When it's going well, it's flying. When it's not going well it's leaving a path of destruction.

But it can also turn it's very head on the ones that are riding it.

Entrepreneurs often turn their heads and burn up the relationships they're in. They're so busy making things happen that they forget about the people who help them the most and the people that love them most.

Entrepreneurs think, 'Oh I don't need to worry about them right now.' As a result, they end up burning the very people they depend on.

The solution is not to do what most people advise: 'Just calm down. Don't try to do so many things. Slow down.'

You've probably heard that before right?

That's not the solution.

The key is to harness your energy ' tame that dragon. Focus. Focus. Focus.

Do one thing at a time. And this is important -- complete it.

Most people do what we call 'dump and run.' They say, 'Here! Get this done!' And they dump it off onto someone else and then run. You may call that delegation. But that's actually abdication. You're abdicating responsibility when you say, 'Here, go do it.'

Instead, you want to delegate responsibility by giving employees the following messages:
1. Here's what needs to be done.
2. Here are the tools and resources you need to get it done.
3. And here's how we will measure performance and results.

When you do that, you will have harnessed the magical dragon. You'll be able to leverage the creative energy and the thick skin you need as an entrepreneur. But you'll be less likely to leave a wake of destruction trailing behind you.

And if you would like me to work with you personally to harness your own magical dragon, I'd be glad to talk with your more about. As a Business GPS reader, your phone consultation is FREE. Call us TODAY at 800-825-1220.
